Currently, there is only limited research on the relationship between alcohol and acne. However, some studies have reported that alcohol may be associated with increased prevalence of acne.

However, Dr. Nerissa Moodley, a dermatologist at KwaZulu-Natal University, warns that these studies are not conclusive.

There are several ways alcohol can exacerbate the outbreak.

1. Changes in hormone levels

Alcohol consumption can increase testosterone and estrogen levels. As the hormone level rises, your oil glands can clog pores and produce a lot of sebum that causes an outbreak.
2. Bacteria growth

According to research, Cutibacterium acnes (a bacterium that exists in pilosebaceous glands and contributes to the inflammatory response of acne vulgaris) metabolizes alcohol and uses it as a fuel that may affect acne-prone skin I will.
3. Inflammation

Alcohol consumption can cause inflammation. As the level of cytokines (these send messagaes to immune cells to fight against harmful substances entering the body such as bacteria) increases, individuals are more likely to develop acne and play an important role in the early stages of acne formation.
How hormones affect acne

Your hormone is responsible for producing sebum through the sebaceous glands of the skin.

"The main hormone that increases sebum production is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is converted from testosterone in the sebaceous gland by the enzyme 5 alpha reductase," Dr. Moodley explains. "DHT is a more potent androgen than testosterone"

As sebum production increases, sebum and keratin materials collect in the hair follicles. This may cause partial obstruction of the follicles and, as a result, may cause the formation of comedone, the major lesion of acne.

Sebum also provides the growth medium of Cutbacterium acnes.
Diet and acne

Dr. Moodley says that the role of diet affecting acne is an evolving concept. "Recent studies have suggested an association between dairy and acne where dairy products contain carbohydrates and stimulate an increased level of IGF-1. Diet-induced hyperinsulinemia that stimulates increased levels of iGF-1 and acne Increase severity Skim milk and whole milk are also related.

"Dietary intervention using hypoglycemia-loaded carbohydrates may have a beneficial endocrine effect, so it may have a therapeutic effect on the treatment of acne.

She says there is no reliable evidence that eating chocolate is associated with an increase in the prevalence or severity of acne.

But if you are worried that your food or alcohol is causing your acne, Dr. Moodley suggests to exclude it from your diet and monitor whether the situation is different .

"Keep in mind that calcium present in milk is essential for bone growth and structure," Dr. Moodley warns.
